Located in the C-wing of Douglas Hall, the Honors House is a unique Academic Residential Program that aims to enrich the lives of NIU students in the Honors Program, or those that are Honors eligible. The Honors House provides students with a stimulating environment in which to live, study, relax, and have fun.
While Honors House residents may share a commitment to their academic pursuits, they come from a wide variety of backgrounds and their choice of study is just as diverse. The Honors House enjoys an atmosphere of respect and camaraderie rarely found in other residential living environments. Many residents choose to return after their first year, and many other students request the Honors House after they have experienced the warm, inviting atmosphere.
The Honors House provides five floors of quiet and modified quiet-lifestyles. The floor lounges are equipped with computers for resident’s usage. Special programming is developed each semester to enhance resident’s ability to tap into valuable resources and allow them access to experiences they normally might not be able to have. Programming in the past has included trips into Chicago to Navy Pier, Shakespeare, Blue Man Group, Second City, Broadway in Chicago and Shedd Aquarium. On-campus activities include discussions regarding career-related topics, performances by NIU Theatre and Dance, game nights and special dinners. Community service activities such as tutoring at Conexion Comunidad and participating in Relay for Life are a vital part of the life of an Honors student.
Douglas Hall is also home to the Honors Lounge which houses a wide-screen television with DVD, VHS and cable hook-ups, a pool table, a dart board, a piano, a computer lab with a color HP LaserJet printer and an assortment of popular games . Honors House Leaders and Honors Community Leaders staff the Honors Lounge. The lounge is open to all honors students, all Honors House residents, and their friends.
